Single-Leg X Guard

Single-leg X, or SLX, is an open guard where you sit under one of the opponent's legs with your shins forming an X around their thigh and ankle. It is one of the best sweeping positions in BJJ and the main on-ramp to the leg lock game.

Elevation and the technical stand

From single-leg X you control the opponent's leg and load it across your body, which makes them easy to off-balance and sweep. The classic finish is to elevate the trapped leg and come up into a technical stand-up to the top position.

The leg lock connection

SLX shares its leg position with the ashi garami family, so the same control that sweeps also threatens the straight ankle lock and, for advanced players, the heel hook. Defending the sweep often feeds the leg lock and the other way around.

Frequently asked questions

What is single-leg X guard?

An open guard played from underneath one of the opponent's legs, with your shins crossed in an X around their thigh and ankle. It gives strong control for sweeps and leg attacks.

What sweeps work from single-leg X?

The technical stand-up is the staple: you elevate the trapped leg, off-balance the opponent, and come up to the top. It pairs with the threat of a leg lock if they resist.

How do single-leg X and X-guard differ?

X-guard controls a standing leg with both of your legs from a deeper position; single-leg X isolates one leg with an X around the thigh and ankle and ties more directly into leg locks.
