BJJ Timer

A free round timer for rolls, drilling, and IBJJF matches. Pick a preset or set your own rounds, then hit Start.

Presets: open mat, comp prep, positional, and drilling. Set round length, rest, and rounds, with a 10-second warning, keep-awake, fullscreen, and a shareable setup link.

How to use the BJJ timer

  1. Pick a preset, or set the round length, rest, and number of rounds.
  2. Tap Start. Three beeps count down 3, 2, 1, then a long, higher tone starts the round. The same tone ends it, and the last three seconds of each rest count down into the next round.
  3. The 10-second warning is on by default: a wood knock on 10, 9, and 8 seconds left tells everyone the round is almost over. Uncheck it if you don't want it.
  4. On a keyboard, Space starts and pauses, N skips to the next round, R resets, and F goes fullscreen.
  5. Tap Share setup to send the exact timer to your training partners or your class.

Presets for open mat, comp prep, and drilling

Each preset is a common way gyms run the clock. Pick one and adjust from there.

PresetRoundsRoundRestTotal
Open mat65:001:0035:00
Comp prep56:000:3032:00
Positional82:000:1517:45
Drilling101:000:1011:30

Comp prep runs a blue belt match length back to back with short rest, so the last round feels like a final. Positional rounds are short on purpose: start in a position, work until someone scores or escapes, then reset.

IBJJF match times by belt

IBJJF match length depends on belt and age division. Tap Use on a row to set the timer to one round of that length.

BeltAdultMaster 1
White5:005:00
Blue6:006:00
Purple7:006:00
Brown8:006:00
Black10:006:00

Juvenile (16 to 17) runs 5:00. Master 2 and older divisions are shorter. Always confirm against the current IBJJF rulebook for your event.

Why the clock stays right

The timer counts from the moment you press Start, not from screen refreshes. If your phone locks or you switch apps, the round and the time left are still right when you come back.

Phones pause sound from pages in the background, so the tones can only play on time while the timer is on screen. Turn on Keep screen awake and leave the page open during rounds.

Run it on the gym TV

Open the timer on a laptop or a smart TV browser and tap Fullscreen. The clock fills the screen and the color changes between roll, rest, and done, so everyone can read it from across the mat.

Put the timer on your gym's website

Copy the embed code and paste it into your site builder. The timer runs inside your page with the same controls. There is nothing to install and no account to create.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a BJJ round?

Most gyms roll 5 or 6 minute rounds with 1 minute of rest. Competition classes often match the IBJJF time for the belt: 5 minutes at white, 6 at blue, 7 at purple, 8 at brown, and 10 at black belt for adults.

How long is an IBJJF match?

Adult matches run 5 minutes at white belt, 6 at blue, 7 at purple, 8 at brown, and 10 at black. Master 1 runs 5 minutes at white and 6 minutes at blue and above, and older master divisions are shorter. Check the current IBJJF rulebook for your event.

Does the timer keep running when my phone locks?

The time stays accurate because it counts from when you pressed Start. Phones pause sound from background pages, so the tones may not play while the screen is off. Turn on Keep screen awake and leave the page open during rounds.

Can I show the timer on a TV at the gym?

Yes. Open it on a laptop or a smart TV browser and use the Fullscreen button. The clock scales up to fill the screen.

Can I send a timer setup to my class?

Tap Share setup. The link opens the timer with your round length, rest, and round count already set, so everyone runs the same clock.

Is the BJJ timer free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no ads, and no limit. It runs in your browser on a phone, tablet, laptop, or TV.
