Single Leg from X-Guard
Learn moreSingle Leg from X-Guard is a sweep that puts the bottom player on top built around a handful of repeatable controls. Bottom player has X-guard with both legs wedged under the standing partner's lead leg, gripping the pant cuff and preparing to switch to a leg hug. Another common starting shape: the bottom player has established the targeted guard with grips and leg connection in place, breaking the top player's base. The ideas that hold it together are knee orientation, stack timing, and leg hug control.
The single leg chain is a sequence of small controls, not one athletic burst. Switch from cuff grip to a tight hug around the trapped leg as the hips reposition. Grab the partner's knee and close the elbow so the kneecap is forced to point up rather than down. Apply downward pressure on that knee while standing, removing weight from the head and shoulder. Drive up off the post leg and finish by lifting the trapped leg as the partner is taken off balance. Break the top player's posture and base by combining grips with leg elevation. Use a coordinated push-pull through opposing limbs to spin the opponent off balance. Follow the opponent up rather than chasing them, keeping the leg or grip connection through the reversal. Extend the legs to push the captured leg up and away. Bottom player stands up underneath the lifted leg with the partner's knee pinned upward, finishing on top in a standing single-leg position.
Later in the single leg, off-balance first, sweep second, come up with the opponent, not after them, and loading the captured leg tend to decide whether the position stays on track. Watch for these mistakes: Hugging the leg first and only then trying to control the knee, which lets the knee turn down. Letting weight settle onto the partner's leg through the head before the knee is reoriented. Trying to sweep before the opponent's weight is committed. Letting go of the top player on the way up instead of riding the connection. The high-percentage version of single leg from x-guard is the one you can still chain when the top player posts or re-bases.
