The Triangle Defense Troubleshooter

My guide to systematically defend against triangle choke attempts from various stages of the attack. If they try to lock the triangle, you'll learn specific responses to escape, counter, or pass the guard based on their positioning and your available defenses

Flow outline

  1. Triangle Prevention

    • If they frame, if they attempt to set up a triangle, you must immediately set defensive postures to prevent them from locking their legs around your head and arm. don’t force it
  2. Both Arms Outside Guard Pass

    • Key detail: usually if you successfully clear their leg and keep both arms outside their guard, you can now pass their guard by controlling their hips and moving to side control
  3. Pull Head Out Guard Pass

    • Often If you manage to pull your head out while maintaining an underhook, you can immediately pass their guard by controlling their upper body and moving to a dominant position
  4. Walk Knee Bulldog

    • Key detail: if you clamp their hip and drop your elbow to control their leg, you can walk your knee through, set a bulldog position, and pass their guard. timing beats strength
  5. Reverse Knee Belly Guard Pass

    • if you set a gable grip and pull their hips close, you can use a reverse knee on belly technique to pass their guard and set top control
  6. Both Arms Outside Guard Pass

    • Once set, if you stack them, stand up, and shove their knees apart, you can clear their leg and arm to pass their guard with both arms outside
  7. Scramble Reset

    • If they try to pull your arms across and you resist with punches and bulldog pressure, you can create a scramble that allows you to reset to a neutral position
  8. Leg Stapled Guard Pass

    • Usually If they manage to pull your arm across but you grab their leg, pull, hop, and use Hindu steps, you can staple their leg and pass their guard
  9. Leg Control Scramble Guard Pass

    • if they pull your arm and elbow across, you can attempt a 'hail mary' underhook with twist/back kick and swim movements to set leg control, create a scramble, or pass their guard. switch if it stalls
