Kata Gatame from Every Position

Hunt the kata gatame from mount, side control, & knee on belly. Every path leads to the neck, then weight, then the finish.

Flow outline

  1. The Kata Gatame Game Plan

    • is your blueprint for hunt. every path leads to choke. study it, internalize it, and execute with aggression
  2. Finishing Mechanics

    • is where you break them. Lock in details—choking arm tight, palm down, head glued to theirs, knee driving into hip. If pressure isn't there, switch to butterfly grip and squeeze until they quit
  3. Knee On Belly

    • Key detail: when it happens, crush their ribs and isolate arm. don't connect your hands yet—control crossface, dig that middle finger into armpit, block hip with your other hand. your knee is a weapon on their near hip. slide it, cup their arm, and when their arm floats above shoulder line, slide your head in. now you're hunting from top
  4. Knee Cut

    • Key detail: slice through their guard. enter knee cut. if they frame, you have two choices: attack darce choke immediately, or cup their rear shoulder and far hip to break their posture and advance
  5. Darce

    • most of the time they gave you their neck—take it. is a finishing opportunity from knee cut when they frame. lock it in and squeeze
  6. Tripod

    • Key detail: they're trying to survive by closing your foot. don't let them. tripod up, create space, and advance to either mount or secure side position. from there, it's finishing time
  7. Three Quarter Mount

    • From here, quick note: you're almost in full control. use tripod to solidify your position. from here, transition to full mount or clear their last defense with a wedge to secure side. both paths end with you finishing fight. don’t force it
  8. Finish From The Mount

    • From here, you have ultimate control. apply kata gatame mechanics—crushing pressure, proper grips, and head position. there's no escape. secure tap
  9. Finish From The Side

    • Once set, you've secured side position. now, apply finishing mechanics. pinch your knees, sprawl to side, drive your hips to mat, and kick their legs away. isolate and finish choke
