The Inverted Turtle Breakdown

Modern turtle defense & back attack sequences from the bottom position. You'll counter common attacks like the Makaomi roll, defend against leg entanglements, & transition into dominant back control positions using inverted entries & leg lock awareness

Flow outline

  1. Turtle Defensive Reactions

    • If they frame, your initial defensive posture when caught in turtle. focus on protecting your neck, maintaining a strong base, and reading your opponent's weight distribution to set up counters
  2. Bridged Back Take

    • Key detail: a dynamic back take where you bridge into your opponent during their roll attempt, using the momentum to secure back control with hooks already in place. timing beats strength
  3. Seated Back Head And Arm

    • From here, most of the time a seated back control position where you have the head and arm trapped. from here you can work chokes, transition to mount, or set up leg entanglements
  4. Seated Back Head And Arm

    • Key detail: same position as above - maintaining control of the head and arm while seated. look for the rear naked choke or transition to a body triangle
  5. Stand Up And Pull Opponent To Back

    • A standing back take where you come to your feet and pull your opponent into back control. Great for when they're trying to disengage from the turtle
  6. Walk Away And Extract Foot

    • Disengaging safely when your leg gets trapped. Use proper foot positioning and hip movement to free your leg without giving up position. Don’t force it
  7. Broken Down Turtle

    • From here, most of the time when your turtle defense has been compromised - opponent has flattened you out. focus on regaining guard or creating space to recompose. timing beats strength
  8. High Ball Ride

    • Once set, a high back control position where you're riding your opponent like a ball. keep chest-to-back contact while looking for choke entries or transitioning to the truck
  9. Broken Down Turtle

    • Same compromised position - opponent has control and you need to escape. Consider granby rolls or elbow escapes to regain guard
