Flow outline

  1. Head And Arm Control

    • Control the head and opposite shoulder while keeping downward elbow pressure on the chest.
    • From Santino DeFranco (@santinodefranco), world champ, UFC coach and BJJ black belt, in the video "Spinning Arm Bar from Side Mount".
    • Grip: grab the head and shoulder and pull him in
    • Pressure: keep downward pressure with the elbow onto his chest
    • Entry: push away with the hands to create the space first
    • Anchor: hook underneath his arm for an underhook
    • Pressure: push down on the elbow to force him to his side
    • Position: works from a traditional scarf hold or a traditional side mount
    • Avoid Letting the elbow come up. The opponent gets the shoulders flat on the mat instead of staying on the side.
  2. Step Over Head

    • Step the outside leg over his head as deep as possible toward his hip.
    • Leg Path: outside leg steps over his head
    • Checkpoint: step closer toward his hip than his shoulder blades
    • Leg Path: put the heel all the way toward his hips
    • Key detail Step deep so the ankle lands near the hip. When you rotate and sit you end up more perpendicular.
    • Avoid Stepping short near the shoulder blades. You end up on the side and the opponent rolls out.
  3. Rotate And Sit Hips

    • Rotate and sit the hips while corkscrewing the opposite direction.
    • Hip Line: sit your hips as you rotate
    • Angle: corkscrew the opposite direction
  4. Pinch Knees Together

    • Pinch the knees together once you are in position.
    • Checkpoint: pinch your knees together
  5. Posture And Extend

    • Posture back, hook the arm, and extend the hips for the tap.
    • Finish: posture back and hook his arm
    • Finish: extend your hips for the tap out
