Open Guard Passing System

A system for passing complicated open guard using distance, grips, and leg control.

Flow outline

  1. Establish Pant Grip

    • Secure a pant grip and create distance to prevent grip breaks.
    • Grip pants at knee level
    • Back up to extend opponent's legs
    • Keep arm aligned with opponent's kicking direction
  2. Control From Distance

    • Maintain control with the pant grip while reading opponent's leg position.
    • Hold grip firmly with arm straight
    • Stay low with hips back
    • Observe opponent's far leg and hip angle
  3. Toriondo Pass Entry

    • Step around and drive forward to pass when the near leg is accessible.
    • Grip far leg at ankle or pants
    • Step around with outside leg
    • Drive shoulder into opponent's hip
  4. Knee Cut Pass Entry

    • Use an arm frame and knee cut when the near leg is wide.
    • Post arm on opponent's hip or ribs
    • Slice knee across to the mat
    • Keep head up and chest forward
  5. Leg Shield Counter

    • Push the ankle down and run around when the leg is shielded.
    • Grab opponent's ankle with free hand
    • Push ankle down toward mat
    • Circle around to side control
