Make'Em Float Like A Butterfly (sweep)

Taught by Zachary Miller @3/7/21 AZ Globetrotters camp. Tips and positions to improve butterfly sweeps in BJJ and armed scenarios ;) - Set up sweeps by creating movement for the opponent. Do so by attacking them - You must hand fight; setting up hooks is not enough

Flow outline

  1. Butterfly Guard

    • - Your head should be below theirs (eg. get it under their chin) - To sweep successfully, you need to get them off of their heels and get their hips higher than yours. If they cross their feet and base heavy, you are not going to sweep them. - You need to hand fight! Just getting your butterfly hooks isn't enough. Getting hooks will help you with setups as well as allow you to keep them close to …
  2. Opponent moves your head or pommels to recover an underhook

    • By doing so, opponent opens up positions for you to attack their arm
  3. Catch a deep overhook on underhooked arm

    • You want to create movement for your opponent. You do so by attacking.
  4. Clasp your free hand with your overhook

    • - Clasp with a gable grip - Torque opponent's arm as much as you can
  5. Kimura

    • If the opponent does nothing (which is very unlikely), they'll get kimura'ed
  6. Opponent postures away to alleviate stress on shoulder

  7. Sweep Towards Overhooked Arm

    • Since their posture is broken down, you can sweep them in the direction of the overhooked arm. Use your far side butterfly hook to lift the opponent.
  8. You have an underhook

  9. Arm Crush

    • Bring your underhook arm deep and gable grip your other arm. Make sure it's deep on their shoulder.
  10. Opponent Postures Away

    • - Opponent will posture away to alleviate the pressure from the arm crusher - Opponent will be expecting you to sweep them towards the side where their arm is trapped so posturing away is also a way to anticipate the sweep
  11. Sweep Opponent to the Side Opposite of Arm Crusher

    • Since opponent is posturing away from the arm crusher, their weight is offset towards the opposite side. Take advantage of this and use your butterfly hook to sweep them in that direction.
  12. Opponent Lifts a Leg - Opposite Side

    • Leg that is lifted is the opposite of the side that you want to sweep them towards
  13. Opponent Lifts a Leg - Same Side

    • The leg that's lifted is the same side that you want to go towards
  14. Opponent Stands Up on Both Feet

  15. WTF pulls out a gun!

  16. Spin around 2 times to disarm with centrifugal force

    • The weapon will fly out because physics
  17. Ankle Pick

    • Grab the ankle with the near side hand. Frame against them with the other.
  18. Hook the Lifted Leg and Tap the Knee on the Floor

    • Hook underneath the leg, tap the knee that's on the floor and sweep them over. It's similar to a flower sweep from closed guard.
  19. Shin to Shin

    • Attach yourself tightly to their leg. You may even grab your own foot to make it extra tight. Do NOT attach with the inside arm because they will take your back. Come inwards!
  20. Sit back and kick your connected leg up

    • Since you are attached so tightly to them, they should fall forward when you sit back. The leg that is shin-to-shin will be kicked upwards to elevate them. The sitting back motion is similar to how you would execute a standard butterfly sweep.
  21. Come Up

    • Use your inside hand to grab the other leg. Now you can roll them and complete the sweep to top position.
  22. Basic Butterfly Sweep

    • Goal is to get their head higher than their hips. Use momentum from sitting back to elevate.
