Flow outline

  1. Knee Shield Frames

    • Establish frames from knee shield half guard to keep the opponent off you.
    • From Jordan Wirth (@jordanwearsnogi), black belt under Jake Shields, teaching his buggy choke on Eddie Bravo's "Mastering the System" (video by Michael Plaster).
    • Frame: frame at his bicep
    • Frame: frame inside at his chest
    • Hip: hinge in with your hip into your knee
    • Frame: frame into his shoulder
    • Reaction: if he comes over the top with his shoulder, frame with your own shoulder and elbow
  2. Over-Drape Entry

    • Push into him and spring up to your hand, sliding over the top into the over-drape.
    • Entry: push into him and spring up to your elbow
    • Entry: slide up over the top of him all the way to your hand
    • Grip: drape the back of your arm over his back
    • Elbow: keep your elbow down, not up
    • Mistake: if you reach straight with your thumb down, he can throw his arm over your head
    • Head: keep your head away from his wrist so he can't grab it and pin it
    • Key detail Come all the way up to your hand, not your elbow. On your elbow you're not close enough.
  3. Lat Pressure

    • Lean your lat and press it against his neck to address the head-and-arm threat.
    • The idea Keep the back of your elbow connected to his back. If it lifts even slightly, he can connect his hands around your head and stuff you.
    • Pressure: lean your lat and press it all the way against his neck
    • Pressure: imagine peeking over the top of a heavy wall, struggling to climb up
    • Anchor: use your arm to hang on him
    • Elbow: make sure your elbow is down
  4. Technical Get-Up Sweep

    • If he leaves his hand down, pop up and technical get-up to sweep behind him.
    • Entry: pop up and technical get up
    • Entry: look to the floor, lift your hips, retrieve your bottom leg
    • Entry: shuffle around behind him
    • Option: if lucky, throw in your twister hook and catch your truck on the way down
  5. Buggy Choke Setup

    • When he connects his hands and forces you back down, go to your elbow, move your hips out, and bring your knee around his shoulder.
    • Reaction: he connects his hands and tries to stuff you back down
    • Entry: go to your elbow and move your hips out
    • Entry: kick both legs and move your hips out
    • Entry: get your knee around his shoulder
    • Entry: kick your knee straight and knee him in the head
    • Avoid Reaching for the buggy early. If he postures up hard, you can armbar yourself. Keep your arm bent and loop the thumb through at the very last moment.
  6. Hide The Shoulder

    • Get your buggy leg around his shoulder towards his temple so the choke is deep and tight.
    • The idea The buggy choke is a triangle concept using your lat. Same as a triangle: knee around the shoulder, not behind it, so he can't get big.
    • Leg Path: get your buggy leg around his shoulder towards his temple
    • Checkpoint: when you bring your leg through, it should be very deep and tight
    • Mistake: if your knee is behind the shoulder, he can get big and there's space
  7. Address Cross Face

    • Before he cross faces you, reach over his shoulder and hug his arm.
    • Reaction: he tries to lift his hand up and frame you with his elbow and pin your head down
    • Entry: reach over his shoulder and hug his arm
    • Position: turn onto your side, not flat on your back
  8. Buggy Choke Finish

    • Finish the buggy choke by looking away, pushing your armpit into his neck, squeezing your lat, and pulling your knee.
    • Finish: look away and push your armpit into his neck
    • Finish: squeeze the lat and reject your lat forward
    • Finish: pull your knee towards you and look away
  9. Buggy Choke After Pass

    • If you can't finish, drop your leg out, let him pass, and lock the buggy choke as he passes.
    • Entry: drop your leg out and let him pass
    • Checkpoint: lock the buggy choke the whole time he passes
    • Anchor: hold his arm so he can't pin your head down
    • Finish: reach up and finish the classic buggy choke
