Half Butterfly Passing Interplay
A system for switching between half butterfly outside passing and flank passing based on opponent reactions.

Headquarters Position
- Starting position with one knee up and one knee down, controlling opponent's hips.
- Inside knee up to block opponent's hip
- Outside foot on mat for base
- Hands control opponent's collar and pants
Half Butterfly Entry
- Drop inside knee and pummel foot outside to trap opponent's bottom leg.
- Drop inside knee to mat
- Pummel foot to outside of opponent's leg
- Scoop up opponent's bottom leg with foot
Foot-to-Foot Control
- Establish foot-to-foot connection and knee into opponent's hip to limit movement.
- Foot-to-foot contact with opponent's bottom leg
- Knee pressed into opponent's hip
- Elbow inside opponent's knee to block knee-to-chest
Opponent Frames Hard
- Opponent extends arms to frame, compromising knee-elbow connection.
- Post hand out at an angle for base
- Right elbow on top of opponent's quad to block knee
- Step over leg when knee is blocked
Step Over Pass
- Step over opponent's leg and solidify chest-to-chest position.
- Step over leg while controlling knee
- Drop hips to flatten opponent
- Keep weight on opponent's chest
Opponent Hugs Knee
- Opponent hugs knee to chest, preventing chest-to-chest and creating a knee shield.
- Knee remains between you and opponent
- Opponent's butterfly hook may extend
Pummel Hand and Drop Shoulder
- Pummel hand between quad and rib, drop shoulder and lift hips to limit butterfly hook extension.
- Pummel hand between opponent's quad and rib
- Drop shoulder below opponent's knee
- Lift hips to drive shoulder into opponent
Back Step to Flank
- Back step to cut angle and flank opponent, ending outside their knee.
- Back step with outside leg
- Cut angle to opponent's side
- Land with chest facing opponent's hip
Camp at Flank Position
- Maintain flank position to fatigue opponent, preventing guard recovery.
- Keep weight on opponent's hip
- Block opponent's knee from coming in
- Stay mobile to follow opponent's movement
Opponent Recovers High Leg
- Opponent pummels a high leg (lasso) to recover guard.
- Opponent's leg hooks over your arm or shoulder
- Opponent creates distance to re-guard
Reset to Half Butterfly
- Drop opponent onto near side hip and feed back into half butterfly on opposite side.
- Drop opponent to near side hip
- Pummel foot to trap opponent's bottom leg
- Re-establish foot-to-foot control
