David Avellan's Reverse Kimura Sweeps from Closed Guard

David Avellan (@davidavellan), creator of the Kimura Trap, uses the reverse kimura grip from closed guard to hit the flower sweep, elevator sweep, scissor sweep, and arm drag. From his video: https://youtu.be/z5dJtc0zExw

Flow outline

  1. Reverse Kimura Grip

    • From closed guard, take wrist control, pull them in, and pass hands to a cross grip over the top with the other hand through the arm to your own wrist.
    • From David Avellan (@davidavellan), ADCC 2009 bronze medalist and creator of the Kimura Trap, in his video "Reverse Kimura Sweeps."
    • The idea The reversed grip eliminates their posting arm, which opens up a lot of sweeps.
    • Grip: wrist control first, pull them in a little bit
    • Grip: pass hands so you control cross grip over the top
    • Grip: other hand comes through the arm and over to your own wrist
    • Checkpoint: it is a kimura grip but reversed
    • Option: you can submit from here, but it's a little awkward in real practice
    • Key detail It is a kimura grip but reversed, not the normal way.
  2. Flower Sweep

    • Release the hand and hook over their wrist, then do a regular flower sweep to the other side while cranking the arm.
    • Grip: release this hand and hook over his wrist
    • Finish: regular flower kick up and over and run it through
    • Reaction: as you sweep you are cranking the arm but not trying to finish it
    • Key detail Crank the arm during the sweep but do not try to finish it.
  3. Follow To Top

    • Follow through to get on top, and if the grip is still good you can look to crank it.
    • Checkpoint: follow through and get on top
    • Grip: if you still have a good grip you can look to crank this
    • Option: sometimes you can get wrist locks here
    • Avoid The grip usually starts to fall apart when you sweep.
  4. Elevator Sweep

    • From the same reverse kimura setup, shrimp out to get your hook in and elevate their leg in a big circular arc.
    • Entry: shrimp out a little bit so you can get your hook in
    • Leg Path: get your foot just under the bend of his knee
    • Finish: elevate in a circular motion doing a big arc, not directly up
    • Weight: lean your hips towards that direction
    • Key detail Elevate in a big circular arc, not directly up.
  5. Scissor Sweep

    • From the same grip, work your scissor sweep with your hips facing this way, knee in, and bottom leg low on the knee with shin across the belly.
    • The idea Holding the grip pulls them in and removes their posting arm, making it a simple sweep.
    • Checkpoint: nothing changes: shrimp out the way you normally would, hips facing this way, knee in
    • Leg Path: bottom leg low on the knee, shin across the belly
    • Grip: holding this up pulls them in so they have no posts with the arm
  6. Arm Drag

    • From the same grip, work an arm drag to bring their chest to your back with your leg up and get behind.
    • Entry: have this grip inside
    • Checkpoint: your leg ends up on the far side, and that's fine
    • Finish: bring their chest to your back with leg up and get behind
